New Puppy Checklist

by | Uncategorized

Getting a new puppy? We compiled this puppy checklist to help you prepare for all the puppy love coming your way!

Essentials

  • CRATE- A crate is an indispensable behavior management tool. It helps with potty training and prevents puppy misbehavior when you are unable to supervise them.
  • PUPPY/EXERCISE PEN- This is another extremely useful management tool that expands into a larger area. It gives the pup more room to play while still keeping them in a safe, confined area.
  • DOG FOOD- Don’t forget water and food bowls.
  • DOG BED
  • CARPET CLEANER – Needs to be an enzymatic cleaner.
  • POOP BAGS
  • TETHER – This is a short leash that I use to keep the pup with me when moving around the house. You can hold it or tether it to a piece of furniture.
  • COLLAR, ID TAG, LEASH, AND HARNESS
  • TREATS- We use soft treats as the primary reward (paired with the marker word) telling them they did something right.
  • KONG TOYS/PUZZLE TOYS- Anything safe to put their food or treats in will work for hours of enjoyment and challenge their mind.
  • CHEW TOYS/FETCH TOYS- This can be bully sticks, Nylabones, etc.
  • EATING & GROOMING TOOLS
  • HOUSE CLEANING TOOLS

Preparing and Puppy-Proofing Your Home

Many common puppy problems can be prevented and managed with proper preparation for the puppy’s arrival. With the items listed above, you are off to a great start. Basic preparations
will help prevent your puppy from chasing anything dangerous and will give them an appropriate outlet for their chewing and mouthing.

Ideally, you, or another family member should set time apart to give the puppy an appropriate amount of time to settle in, build independence when being left alone, and be appropriately crate and potty-trained.

Another important thing to remember to do is to take the new pup to the vet and research pet insurance. Adding a list of important emergency phone numbers and knowing where the nearest emergency pet doctor is will give you peace of mind if an emergency happens.

HAVE FUN AND ENJOY EVERY MOMENT WITH YOUR PUP!
